AF assist on a Nikon D300

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

This caught me out last night while playing with a slaved flash, I couldn’t get the auto focus assist light to come on my D300

So I did a search this morning, and found http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00OikF

“AF-assist illuminatior is only available when both of the following conditions are met:

1. Illuminator is turned on (pg.273)
2. Single-servo AF is selected for focus mode (pg.62).
3. Auto-area AF is chosen for AF-area mode, or single-point or dynamic-area AF is chosen (pg.64).
4. Center focus point is selected. I mean the focus point selection must be in center of viewfinder(pg.66)

I knew about 1,2 and 3. What caught me out was 4

Chicago Photos

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

I am in Chicago doing a data center build out, on the first day there I was able to get out an do some photography. I started at the Metra Train Station in Itasca, which is about half a mile away from my hotel.

Once in Chicago I walked around looking for opportunities for some night time shots.

Nikon and GPS

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I have been interested in tagging my photos with gps data and Nikon just released their GP-1 gps unit, but is geotagging your photos really worth $240? The competition seems to be the di-gps pro which comes in at $313 with shipping. It would be nice if I could reuse my bluetooth gps unit I use in the car, but a Bluetooth adapter is $249. Maybe a christmas gift for someone who has everything, but I think I will skip for the moment.

Passport Photos on the cheap

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Since I always seem to be needing passport photos I thought I would see if there is a cheaper way of doing it rather than going into a camera shop. The last time I did it they used a digital camera and printed them off in house, the rub is they charged me almost $7 for for this. This time I got a co worker to take the photo, a quick online search and I came up with http://www.epassportphoto.com/ where they crop and format your photo to give you a 4×6 jpeg with 6 photos for free. A few minutes later I have uploaded the jpg to Ritz Camera and I am about to go grab the picture. Total cost $0.22. That sure beats the $8 they would have charged me if I went into the shop and asked them to do it.
